Here’s something that happens to all of at one time or another: We come to realize that we’ve been intent on changing something about our lives for quite a while, but haven’t yet acted on it. How long have we vowed to start an exercise program, shore up a key relationship or better deal with our fears, guilt, or any number of issues? We’re aware, think about it and its importance, yet we have to constantly remind ourselves to get started on it.

Now for the unpleasant part: The odds are overwhelming that we’re not going to make the changes by ourselves. If we haven’t done whatever it is, but still consider it important, why on earth do we think today or tomorrow will be any different? Is karma going to suddenly intervene? It’s not.

Here’s where affirmations, calendar notations and post-it notes don’t apply well. These types of motivational reminders work best when we’ve started something and need a nudge or a push to stay in pursuit of our goal.

What’s needed here is to face the fact that we’re not going to make the desired change on our own and that we need help — and we need it now.

This is nothing to feel bad about, every single one of us, regardless of our station in life, arrives at junctures where we need outside assistance to begin a journey and even continue it.

There are those, though, who never come to terms with this. There are those who come to terms but capitulate to their egos, thus preventing them from asking for help. And then there are those who ask with ease and comfort, because they’ve successfully confronted their limitations.
